Exciting news, the Cannabis Cup is coming to our very own New Brunswick this year. Here, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about the Cannabis Cup in Canada, how to attend, and how to enter if you dare!

What is the Cannabis Cup?

The Cannabis Cup is the award event for tasty new nug strains and other cannabis products, and it’s coming to Canada. It started in Amsterdam in 1988, and over the years it has evolved from a small underground weed competition to a globally respected award by facing the challenges of legalisation, and the stigma associated with our favourite plant. The Cannabis Cup confers prestige to its winners and offers a stage for emerging strains and products to earn a reputation.

Amsterdam doesn’t do a Cannabis Cup anymore, their last one was in 2014, but in 2010 Cannabis Cup started up in the U.S. and as more states move toward legalising marijuana it will surely grow. Now that recreational weed is legal nationwide, this year we’re seeing our first Cannabis Cup in Canada, and we’re hopeful that to see more Cannabis Cup events here.

Pre-pandemic, the Cannabis Cup operated as a type of touring festival, with high profile individuals and cannabis masters serving as the judges and bringing new brands and old brands alike to celebrate our bud. Imagine a music festival, but with booths dedicated to cannabis products instead of beer.

How You Can Participate This Year

Last year, the novel coronavirus mucked everything up. However, this year, the Cannabis Cup has adjusted in the face of COVID-19, and while it’s definitely different, it’s more accessible for us regular people to influence. That’s right, now we, aka you, can be a judge.

For the first time, instead of the Cannabis Cup award winners being the result of a judge panel of 25-30 selected individuals, the competition will be judged by “we, the people”. If you have the desire, the money, and transportation to a nearby participating Cannabis NB dispensary, you’re in.

The VP of Operations for Cannabis NB, Lara Wood said:

“We are very excited to be launching our first Cannabis NB Cup. It’s a great opportunity for our partners in Atlantic Canada to showcase their best dry flower products, and a chance for our customers to participate directly in this unique event as judges.”

Details on The Cannabis Cup in New Brunswick

New Brunswick provincial government maintains its grip on the sales of cannabis products, through the exclusive retail dealer Cannabis NB, and it seems like they’re really getting into the spirit of things. They’re bringing the Cannabis Cup to their retail outlets. They’re bringing the Cannabis Cup to their retail outlets. Specially selected “kits” contain eight different samples of cannabis flower.

These 30-gram kits will be sold for $250 a piece up until July 28th, but there’s a limited number available so hurry in before stock runs out. Here’s a list of the box’s dried flower contents, 3.5-gram baggies each:

  1. FIGR’s Black Cherry Punch
  2. AtlantiCann’s Msiku ICC x Kush Mints 11
  3. Aqualitas’ Ghost Train Haze
  4. Stewart Farms’ Sky Cuddler Double Kush
  5. Crystal Cure’s Tiger Bomb
  6. Zenabis’ Namaste D Bubba
  7. Organigram’s Edison Mac-1
  8. Mernova Medicinal’s Ritual Cannabis Lemon Haze

In addition to the nugs, the kit comes with a guided scoring book, but the judges (you!) will vote online. Aspects to be scored include but are not limited to:

  • Bud structure
  • Aroma
  • Visual appeal
  • Experience
  • Taste

The categories for winners are:

  • Best in Grow (the big winner)
  • Runner-Up (second place)
  • Honourable Mention (third place)
  • Best Looking (top score for appearance and aroma)
  • Best Experience (top score for consumption and experience)

Award winners will be announced on July 30, and the winning flower for the “Best in Grow” category will receive automatic submission into the fall’s Cannabis NB Cup National Edition. If you miss out on a kit, that’s definitely a bummer for you, but you’ll still get a chance to taste the big winner. The Best in Grow bud will feature in the Cannabis NB stores.
