Halifax Waterfront
A great place to explore in Halifax when you’re high is the waterfront. Start by satisfying your munchies at the Halifax Seaport Farmers Market, which is actually the longest continuously operating farmers’ market in North America. Stop by Julien’s Pastry Shop for a butter croissant or for some fresh samosas at Amin’s Indian Cuisine.
Afterwards, you can go for a leisurely stroll down the four km-long boardwalks. People-watching is even more interesting when you’re stoned, and if you still have an appetite, there are many culinary options to choose from along the boardwalk.
Halifax Public Gardens
If you’re more of a nature watcher than a people watcher, you might prefer a walk in the Halifax Public Gardens. In spring, go to see the tulips, crocuses, and daffodils; in summer, enjoy the azaleas, poppies, and roses; and in the fall, you can admire the multicoloured Japanese Maples.
Point Pleasant Park
Another location to enjoy nature is Point Pleasant Park, a historic 75-hectare wooded park boasting 39 km of winding trails and wide paths. Aside from exploring the trails, you can visit ruins of early fortifications. This park’s history can be traced all the way back to the foundation of the St. Aspinquid’s Chapel in the 17th century. Seven fortifications were also built in what is now Point Pleasant Park in the 18th century: the Cambridge Battery, Prince of Wales Tower, Fort Ogilvie, Northwest Arm Battery, Point Pleasant Battery, Chain Battery, and Chain Rock. After visiting these historical sites, take a dip in the beaches that surround this peninsula.
Long Lake Provincial Park
Just a 15-minute drive from downtown Halifax – if you’re high, consider taking the bus – Long Lake Provincial Park is any nature lover’s playground. You can enjoy lakeside views, streams, rivers, vegetation, beaver dams, birds, and diverse wildlife surprisingly close to an urban area. Although it’s a very popular park, it’s big enough for everyone to find his or her own spot. Enjoy a picnic lunch and a relaxing afternoon amidst nature or explore one of this park’s many trails.
If you’re not a seasoned hiker – or maybe an extremely stoned one – consider taking Lakeview Trail, a 3.5 km loop around Witherod Lake. This trail is well constructed and has benches along the path. Explore some pathways off the main trail for some scenic lookout points and don’t miss the access point to Long Lake.
If you’re feeling more adventurous, check out the Pipeline Trail Loop, an unmarked and unmaintained three km wilderness trail. Make sure you have high-cut waterproof footwear as this is often a muddy and slippery trail.
Halifax Harbour Ferry
For some beautiful scenery minus the walking, consider going for a ferry ride to Dartmouth. Dartmouth is foodie heaven – even more so for a foodie with the munchies.
